African Dance Residencies

Drummer Steve Ferraris and Dancer James Marshall have collaborated for more than 10 years to bring the joys and the challenges of African Dance to school children throughout New England.

A talented dancer and teacher, James Marshall received his training at Arthur Hall's Afro-American Dance Ensemble of Philadelphia at the Ile Ife Center in Philadelphia, eventually becoming Arthur Hall's protege and the principal dancer in the company.

Steve Ferraris gained his experience in African Dance as a drummer for the master dancer and educator Arthur Hall. Steve has studied and taught African drumming and worked as an artist in residence with both Arthur Hall and James Marshall for more than 20 years.

This wealth of experience accounts for the joy and the challenge that children experience during a James Marshall and Steve Ferraris African dance residency.

A TYPICAL 1 WEEK RESIDENCY includes:

Day 1

An introduction to African instruments and African dance-this can be accomplished by either a welcoming performance for a large assembly or a series of smaller classes on the first day. The students get to try the African percussion instruments and get some instruction on techniques and rhythms so that they have some appreciation for the drums and the music that they will be dancing to.

Day 2

Dance class begins with stretching to the sound of the drums. Fundamental African dance movements are practiced standing in place.

Day 3

Stretching, review movements in place, start to practice movements moving in line.

Day 4

Choreography of movements into a Dance presentation. Discussion of materials to bring from home for costumes.

Day 5

Dress rehearsal for an afternoon or evening CULMINATING EVENT.
